Reem Hamdan

 

Director of the Planning & Studies Department at Jordan’s Electricity

Distribution Company

Reem Hamdan was one of two Jordanian women who earned a Bachelor

of Science in Electrical Engineering in 1993. In 2006 she was selected as a presenter in the 15th annual seminar sponsored by the International Council on Large Electrical Systems (CIGRE) and took  first place in applied research for her paper on electrical privatization.l

Nesreen Ghaddar

 

Associate Provost and Endowed Qatar Chair in Energy Studies; Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the American University of Beirut

Dr. Ghaddar joined the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the American University of Beirut in 1991, serving in different positions throughout the years. Dr. Ghaddar is an accomplished scientist; she is a founding member of the Energy Research Group; helped develop a Master’s degree program in Applied Energy; and has published over 130 journal papers. Dr. Ghaddar received several awards including the Outstanding Reviewer Award for the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Journal of Heat Transfer.

Fatima Al Abdali

Dr. Fatima Al-Abdali joined the Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research as an Assistant ResearchScientist in the Environment and Earth Sciences Division and later held the position of AssociateResearch Scientist in the same department. She received many honors including the DistinguishedArab Women Award. Her specialties are environmental hazards from industrial wastes andemissions and marine pollution. She is actively involved in several environmental and publicawareness activities in Kuwait

Lubna Hamoud Al-Kharusi

 

Director of the Center for Marine Science and Fisheries and the Acting Director of Fisheries Statics and Information in the Ministry of Fisheries

Dr. Lubna Al-Kharursi selected a demanding male-dominated field of study: Geographical Information Systems. She grew up in Zanzibar by the ocean and became interested in Marine Science. Lubna obtained a Bachelor’s and Master’s of Science in Chemistry and completed her PhD in Geographical Information Systems in Fisheries Management. Lubna has many published works. In her free time she enjoys the company of her husband and three children, as well as diving in Oman’s diverse marine ecosystems.

Professor of Organometallic and Inorganic Chemistry, Mansoura University

Dr. Nagwa Nawar has a passion for education and empowering women. She serves as a mentor and role model to numerous aspiring female scientists in Egypt. Prior to her current position, Nagwa taught principles of inorganic chemistry in Jeddah. She presented her research in conferences around the world and won several distinguished awards. Nagwa is married with two sons and was selected in early 2010 by the board of Mansoura University as Mother of the Year

Hakima Himmich

 

President of Morocco’s AIDS Control Association (ALCS) and Chief ofthe Infectious Diseases Unit at the University Hospital Center in Casablanca

Dr. Hakima Himmich is a leader in raising awareness about HIV/AIDS in Morocco. Sheinitiated several HIV prevention campaigns and is working to provide anonymous and freetesting in an effort to combat discrimination against those infected by the virus. Hakimahas authored dozens of publications on HIV/AIDS and holds many awards, includingUNAIDS’ Red Ribbon Award.

Dean for the Faculty of Pharmacy at An-Najah National University and the Director of Poison Control and Drug Information Center (PCDIC)

Dr. Ansam Sawalha joined An-Najah National University in 1999 as a faculty member at theCollege of Pharmacy after earning her PhD in Pharmacology and Toxicology from theUniversity of Texas at Austin. She established the first and only Poison Control and DrugInformation Center in Palestine in 2006 to handle emergencies and give health careproviders and patient’s information related to poisons and medications. She is a published researcher.

Khawla S. Al-Kuraya 

 

Director at the King Fahad National Center for Children's Cancer and Research at the King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Center in Riyadh

Dr. Khawla S. Al-Kuraya studied medicine at the King Saud University School of Medicine in Riyadh and completed her residency and post-graduate fellowship in clinical pathology at Georgetown University Medical Center in Washington D.C. where she focused on molecular diagnostics and cancer genomics. Khawla was the first Saudi woman to receive the King Abdulaziz Award of Excellence-1st Class and has over 50 published articles. Her work and public recognition have made her a role model for women pursuing science in Saudi Arabia. She is married and has four children.

Zahwa Al Kuwari 

 

Director of Environmental Assessment and Planning, PublicCommission for the Protection of Marine Resources, Environment and Wildlife

Dr. Zahwa Al Kuwari is an internationally-recognized expert on environmental planningand awareness. A keen environmental activist, she laid the foundation for Bahrain’s firstsuccessful aluminum and steel recycling program and serves as the liaison officer betweenthe UN and the Kingdom of Bahrain on all issues regarding climate change. She played amajor role in pushing an environmental agenda into the King’s Economic Vision 2030,ensuring that the Kingdom of Bahrain remains committed to protecting the environment

Jamela Al- Raiby

 

Pediatrician and Deputy Minister of Public Health and Population

Dr. Al- Raiby’s work focuses on maternal and neonatal health, family planning, and community awareness of health issues. She implemented programs to prevent violence against women, children, and the elderly. She is an advocate for raising the for legal marriage age in Yemen. Dr. Jamela played an active role in the establishment of the National Safe Motherhood Alliance and serves as a member of its Executive Board.

Habiba Bouhamed Chaabouni

 

Chief of the Department of Congenital and Hereditary Diseases at the Charles Nicolle Hospital and Director of the Laboratory of Human Genetics Research at the Faculty of Medicine of Tunis

Dr. Chaabouni has devoted her medical and research career to children and families affected by genetic disorders. A pioneer in Tunisia's medical profession, she has actively sought to increase research and training in the field of genetics. In 2006 she received the L'Oreal-UNESCO Award for Women in Science for her contribution to the analysis and prevention of hereditary disorders.

Hamda A. Al-Thani

 

Director of the National Energy and Water Research Center at the Abu Dhabi Water and Electricity Authority, UAE

Dr. Hamda Al-Thani's wealth of knowledge, including her scientific experience with the National Renewable Energy Laboratory and her numerous scientific research publications make her an expert in high technology. Through her position as the Director of the National Energy and Water Research Center at the Abu Dhabi Water and Electricity Authority (ADWEA), Dr. Al-Thani serves as a role model for female scientists across the region. Dr. Al-Thani has 12 years experience in growth, processing, and characterization of thin film solar cell and devices.
